In this task, students will create an original pattern using computer-aided pattern design. |
Standard 17: Demonstrate proficiency in basic pattern design and drafting techniques by designing and creating an original garment pattern. Compare and contrast skill requirements for manual and computer-aided pattern design and drafting methods. |

Task Guide
This activity will require student to apply what they learned during the lesson on pattern design and drafting techniques to an activity.
Pattern Design Project
Students will watch the You Tube instructional videos, “ Inkscape Lesson: Interface and Basic Drawing and Creating Vector Repeated Patterns for an introduction to Inkscape software.
Students will create an original pattern using the computer aided pattern design software.
Pattern Design Task
Watch the You Tube instructional videos Inkscape Lesson: Interface and Basic Drawing and Creating Vector Repeated Patterns for an introduction to Inkscape software.
Create a sketch of an original pattern design that can be used on a garment of your choice e.g. pants, shirt, dress, skirt etc.
Scan or take a picture of your design.
Upload your sketch to the Inkscape software
Use the Inkscape software to turn your design into a repetitive pattern.
Once your design is complete, print a copy to submit to your teacher/instructor.
Along with submitting your design you must include a paragraph describing the reason for your: design, color choice, and the overall mood of your pattern.
The teacher/instructor will make all patterns available for viewing for the entire class.
