Pesticide Labeling

Task Description

Standards

In this activity, students will:

  • develop a mock label for a new (hypothetical) pesticide using paper slide, Flipgrid, or another presentation medium to demonstrate the importance of selecting an effective pest management program.

Landscaping and Turf Science, Standard 12: Identify and compare the common landscape and turf grass pests and their respective prevention and control methods. Categorize the basic types of pesticides and describe their application methods, including but not limited to rate, environmental conditions, and reentry times. Using quantitative reasoning and appropriate units, calculate proper formulations of pesticides based upon label directions.

Greenhouse Management, Standard 23: Identify the types of pesticides and their applications for greenhouse production. Research the safety hazards associated with pesticide use for multiple greenhouse pesticides. Calculate proper formulations of pesticides based upon label directions for specific pests by creating systems of equations that describe numerical relationships.

Upon successful completion of these task, students will demonstrate the ability to:

  • distinguish between the various types of pesticide registration,
  • explain how to read the pesticide label,
  • determine the percentage of active ingredient(s) in a pesticide formulation,
  • identify the key statements on a pesticide label, and
  • describe how to interpret other documents and online resources referenced on the label.

To move students towards deeper understanding, they should be given opportunities to:

  • research the impact of the active ingredients in pesticide formulation;
  • compare and contrast the environmental, physical, and chemical hazards of mixing pesticides.

Task Activity Steps

  1. Students will create a mock label for a new (hypothetical) pesticide using paper slide, flip grid or other presentation media. The pesticide label must include at least the following:
    1. trade, brand, or product name,
    2. ingredient statement,
    3. use classification statement,
    4. type of pesticide,
    5. net contents,
    6. name and address of manufacturer,
    7. emergency telephone number,
    8. registration numbers,
    9. establishment number,
    10. signal words and symbols,
    11. precautionary statements,
    12. first aid statements,
    13. environmental hazards,
    14. physical or chemical hazards,
    15. agricultural use requirements,
    16. nonagricultural use requirements,
    17. storage and disposal, and
    18. directions for use.
  2. Teacher will provide grading expectations and submission directions to the students.
