Managing Stress in Law Enforcement

Task Description

Standards

Students will:

  • will watch a short video of a police officer discussing PTSD (4:31),
  • read an article from the Police1 website using a guided reading sheet, and
  • create a slide presentation with no more than ten slides to help law enforcement officers understand and respond to stress from their jobs.

5) Describe the law enforcement/public safety agency role in saving lives and the protection of lives and property. Anticipate how this role can cause stress for an officer and why physical fitness and proper nutrition are critical for officers and emergency responders.

Upon successful completion of these tasks students will demonstrate the ability to:

  • discuss job stress for law enforcement officers including topics such as:
  • causes of stress,
  • consequences of stress,
  • reducing stress, and
  • managing stress.

To move students towards deeper understanding, they should be given opportunities to:

  1. research the physical effects of long-term stress in law enforcement officers and
  2. survey police department wellness programs in Tennessee’s largest police departments to create a spreadsheet to compare and contrast stress reducing opportunities afforded to law enforcement officers across the state.

  1. Write a three sentence comparison of reducing stress and managing stress.

 

How to Manage Stress

  1. From the list of methods to manage stress, list two things you are already doing. If you aren’t doing two things from the list, list two you need to start doing.

 

  1. For this portion of the assignment, assume the role of your precinct’s Mental Health officer, and create a slide presentation with no more than ten slides to use in your presentation to officers in your next mental health training. Make sure to include enough information on each slide for officers who are unable to attend and will have to read through the power point without your narration. You may use the information linked in this document and/or other sources. Don’t forget to cite your sources.
