Student Video Guide
- Check the age of the tire.
- Old tires should be replaced based on manufacturers specifications.
- Normally 5 to 10-year-old tires need to be replaced.
- Check the tire pressure.
- Follow manufacturers specifications for proper pressure.
- Check the tire pressure when the tires are cold.
- It is best to let them sit an hour to get a proper cold pressure reading.
- Give the wheel a shake.
- Checking the bearings, steering and suspension components.
- All systems connected to the wheels affect the wear patterns on the tires.
- Run hands around tire.
- Feeling for wear, damage or anything stuck in the tire.
- Check tire tread wear.
- Use tread depth gauge.
- 2/32 inch or less tread means a new tire is needed.
- Check tread depth over entire tire – not just in center.
Indications of problems with a tire.
- If one tire is less inflated than the other tires.
- TPMS (dashboard light) comes on indicating low tire pressure.
- Abnormal wear patterns.
- Low tread depth - less than 2/32 inch.
Tips to inspecting tires.
- Digital tire pressure gauges are the most accurate.
- TPMS system battery may be worn out – giving false reading.
- Be sure to use tread depth gauge properly.
- Follow instructions.
- Measure across the entire tire.
- Tires have wear bars in their tread to indicate when the tread depth is worn down.
