Elements and Principles of Design

Task Description

Standards

In this task, students will use Photopea to create a design with the subject matter of their choosing. The design must contain the elements of line, shape, and texture while also containing balance and contrast principles.

Standard 6: Analyze the elements of design by evaluating their purposes and applications in a variety of design applications.

  1. Line
  2. Shape/form
  3. Space/size/stability
  4. Value
  5. Color
  6. Texture
  7. Typography

For example, label and explain the elements of design in a given book cover compared with a billboard.

Upon successful completion of these tasks students will demonstrate the ability to:

 

  • define the seven elements and seven principles of design.
  • distinguish between principles of design and elements of design.

To move students towards deeper understanding, they should be given opportunities to:

 

  • construct a design using good composition.
  • create a design using their knowledge of how elements and principles work together to determine a successful product of design.

TASK GUIDES

This activity will require students to apply what they learned during the lesson on the Elements of Design and Principles of Design to an activity.

Photopea Activity

 

  1. Students will use Photopea and the internet to create a design with the subject matter of their choosing.
  2. The design must contain the following elements:
  • Line
  • Shape
  • Texture
  • Balance and contrast principles
  1. Once complete the students will submit their designs to their teacher and the teacher will make them available for viewing for the entire class.
