Donning and Doffing PPE

Task Description


Students will:

  • Watch the linked video and complete guided notes
  • Complete the step by step task form
  • Practice donning and doffing PPE
  • Film themselves accurately demonstrating the steps while narrating the rationale for each item/step

Note: for this task, students may improvise with items they have at home:

  • Button down shirt for gown
  • Winter gloves for gloves
  • Mask they use for going out
  • Sunglasses or prescription glasses for goggles
  • Hand sanitizer or lotion for hand hygiene

Standard 11: Review infection control guidelines, Standard Precaution guidelines, Transmission-Based precautions, Personal Protective Equipment use, and infection control. Practice skills related to hand washing, donning and doffing a gown, masks, gloves and goggles, handling and cleaning spills, cleaning equipment, and handling laundry.

Upon successful completion of these tasks students will demonstrate the ability to: 

  1. Explain the steps for donning and doffing PPE
  2. Provide the rationale for the use of each item
  3. Explain the rationale for the order in which they are donned and doffed.

To move students towards deeper understanding, they should be given opportunities to:

  • Teach another student or a patient’s family member to perform the steps correctly.
  • compare and contrast donning and doffing PPE with surgical scrubbing, gowning, and gloving
