The focus of this week’s instruction is to learn the branches of government, what a president is, what a president does, and how a person becomes president.  Students will know

  • About the lives and legacies of five famous presidents
  • Symbols that represent America

Lesson Overviews

  • LESSON 16: In this lesson, students will identify Abraham Lincoln as an important president of the United States, explain that Abraham Lincoln was known as “Honest Abe” and why he was called that, explain Abraham Lincoln’s role during the U.S. Civil War.
  • LESSON 17: In this lesson, students will Identify Theodore Roosevelt as an important president of the United States, describe how Theodore Roosevelt’s childhood affected his life as president, describe how Theodore Roosevelt loved the outdoors, and explain that Theodore Roosevelt worked for nature conservation.
  • LESSON 18: In this lesson, students will identify Barack Obama as the forty-fourth president of the United States and explain the importance of education in Barack Obama’s life and presidency.
  • LESSON 19: In this lesson, students will identify the Mount Rushmore presidents, identify Mount Rushmore as a monument, explain that Mount Rushmore was carved on Native American sacred land.
  • LESSON 20: In this lesson students will listen to the trade book, Woodrow, the White House Mouse, review the role of the president and his duties, and review American Symbols.

  • Reviewing initial and final digraphs
  • Reviewing CCVC/CVCC/CCVCC word reading
  • Reading the following decodable stories: “The Pots and Pans Band”, When It’s Hot”, and “Ann’s Hat Box”

  • LESSON 2: In this lesson, students will complete an oral blending and sound/spelling review, tricky words review, and small group read, “The Pots and Pans Band”.
  • LESSON 3:  In this lesson, students will complete an oral blending and sound/spelling review, uppercase letter review, and small group read, “The Pots and Pans Band”.
  • LESSON 4: In this lesson, students will complete a tricky words  and sound/spelling review, yes/no questions review,  whole group read, “When It’s Hot”, and answer story questions.
  • LESSON 5: In this lesson, students will complete an oral blending and sound/spelling review, match sentences with corresponding sentences, small group read, “Ann’s Hat Box”, and answer comprehension questions about the text that they read.
